How Upfit works

Last updated 9 October 2026

Upfit is an iPhone app that uses your front camera to count your reps and give spoken form cues during bodyweight workouts at home. This page explains what happens from set-up to the end of a session.

How do I set up Upfit?

Stand your phone upright on the floor with the camera facing you. Lean it against a wall if you need to. Then step back until the camera can see your whole body, head to feet, for the entire workout. About two to three metres (six to ten feet) away works well.

Before every workout the app shows two set-up slides and asks you to tilt the phone until a line turns green and sits level. The workout starts on its own once the phone holds level. Good lighting and a clear background help tracking. You need floor space to jump, lunge and lie down. See where to put your phone in the support FAQ.

A workout needs an internet connection to start. Upfit tracks one person at a time.

What does a session look like?

Each session has 15 exercises and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It is split into three blocks:

  • Warm-up: 2 exercises, 60 seconds each.
  • Main moves: 10 exercises. Each set lasts 40, 50 or 60 seconds, depending on the fitness level you chose.
  • Finishers: 3 exercises, each 10 seconds longer than a main set.

Before each exercise, a short demo clip plays and the coach explains the move out loud. Then the set runs on a clock, and the next exercise starts by itself. Every exercise is bodyweight only. If you play your own music, it keeps playing and gets quieter while the coach speaks.

At the end you get a report with time, estimated calories, total reps and a form score. You can rate the workout Easy, Just Right or Hard. Easy makes the next session slightly harder and Hard makes it slightly easier.

How does Upfit count my reps?

Your iPhone's front camera feeds a pose model that runs on the phone. It finds points on your body, up to 20 times a second. Each exercise has its own detector, which measures your body in the way that move needs, such as how deep a squat goes or whether your feet left the floor.

When a rep passes the check, the coach counts it out loud. A rep that falls short is not counted. A few moves work differently. The plank hold is a timed hold with no reps, and Hops and Easy Jog only count and pace you.

How do the spoken form cues work?

When a rep fails a check, the coach may say a short correction for that fault. The lines are pre-recorded and chosen by rules. They are not made up on the spot, and there is no chatbot. Corrections have cooldowns so they do not stack up. The coach also stays quiet when it cannot see you.

Examples of real cues:

  • "Sit deeper into the squat — get those thighs to parallel!"
  • "Wrong leg" on moves that work one side at a time.
  • "Lift the hips out of the forearm plank"

Floor moves such as planks, crunches and burpees are done with the phone side-on. The app tells you which way to face.

Is Upfit AI?

The AI in Upfit is an on-device pose model plus rules for each exercise. It does not hear you, and it does not hold a conversation. See what Upfit can't check for the limits.

Does Upfit record my video?

No. Camera frames are processed on your phone and are never recorded or uploaded. Read privacy in plain words for the details.
